This ongoing war has exacted a terrible price on both Palestinians and Israelis. These past eleven months of immense devastation, loss, and despair come with another casualty: recognition of the basic humanity of both Palestinians and Israelis, and acknowledgement that all of us have the same basic rights that must be respected.

So for me, a point of light in all this darkness is HaMoked’s staff of Israelis and Palestinians who have continued to work together, day in and day out, to defend basic rights.

Throughout this horrific year, HaMoked has stayed true to its core mandate of providing individual assistance and conducting strategic litigation on behalf of Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip living under occupation and now war. The need for our assistance has never been greater. Despite the enormous obstacles, here’s what we’ve been able to do:

• We have located thousands of people in detention, providing answers and some peace of mind to worried families;
• We have managed to get over 100 people, including 31 children, out of Gaza: Israeli citizens and East Jerusalemites who were visiting relatives when the war broke out;
• We have litigated and advocated on behalf of the thousands of farmers denied access to their West Bank lands beyond the Separation Wall;
• We have filed dozens of petitions to Israeli courts to stop systemic abuse and torture in Israeli prisons, and to challenge the enforced disappearance of detainees from Gaza;
• We have kept East Jerusalem families together, preventing revocation of residency rights.
